adjacent exposure

Xenaudial was unimpressed with SoundCloud’s kowtowing to McCartney, whose embedded presence in #5 was machinically detected & suppressed.

They—the collective copyright enforcing thought form—had evidently lucked into an algorithm that could parse two discrete mixed signals perfectly embedded within one another. Since the hypershort brand sigil—a judiciously constituted, psychoacoustically targeted timbral cocktail detonating in pre-cognitive time— had made its irruptive entry onto the scene, technologies of timbral segregation were developed that could perform real-time analyses of complex superimpositions occurring in any given spacetime, conjuring an instant network of associations and affinities. Xenaudial, you will recall, famously mashed Southern fried Al Green’s Still in Love With You and the theme from fratboy romance tearjerker Love Story without making any edits, simply laying one track over the other. One perpetually heard through the other. He says it was an accident. He was looking through a folder whose contents were ordered by file size and noted the tracks with an equivalent number of MB, picking two which seemed to be the least likely collaborators. The adjacency went viral, first through Twitter, then to YouTube where multiple videos were made within a few hours. His close collaborator, phonomagus lutlopl called them “kilobyte sandwiches”.

No surprise. Xenaudial knew that his form of psychedelic adjacency* making would require constant updating in order to outflank predatory maneuvers. It was futile of course. You know the story about the noise and the counter-noise, both perfectly suited to each other, maintaining homeostatic balance. Feedback never felt so…lulling. What was really required was a form of noise erupting from the future that could blowback into the present, jumpstarting alternate procedures which current computational resources couldn’t yet map. To stay ahead of the military-entertainment avant-garde, Xenaudial thought, one had to literally live in the future. One had to know where the holes would be, and kairotically implant a paracoustic mole waiting for the opportune time to surface.

*Psychedelic adjacencies are generated via the strategic imbrication of overtly incongruent but subliminally (genetically) congenial signals.
